The Teal Pumpkin Project – Inclusive Trick-or-Treating

The Teal Pumpkin Project - Allergy-Friendly Trick-or-Treating

Halloween can be a tricky time for families managing food allergies, with many traditional Halloween treats being unsafe for children with life-threatening food allergies.

In Australia, food allergies are estimated to affect 1-2% of adults and 4-8% of children under 5 years of age, according to the South Australian Department of Health

The most common triggers of allergic reactions in childhood are egg, peanuts, tree nuts and cow’s milk. Unfortunately for many Australian children, this rules out many sweets, lollies and chocolates offered to little ghosts and ghouls trick-or-treating at Halloween.

About the Teal Pumpkin Project

The Teal Pumpkin Project, initiated by the Food Allergy Research Organization in the United States, encourages people to raise awareness of food allergies and promotes inclusion of all trick-or-treaters throughout the Halloween season. The now worldwide movement offers an alternative for kids with food allergies, as well as other children for whom candy is not an option, by encouraging households to offer a combination of food and non-food treats.

Australian-based website TrickorTreatMe is supporting the Teal Pumpkin Project by allowing households to nominate as an allergy-friendly household offering non-food treats. Those households are displayed as teal pumpkins on the TrickorTreatMe map.

“Halloween is becoming more popular every year in Australia. The Teal Pumpkin Project allows kids with allergies to participate freely in the fun of trick-or-treating, without feeling like they are missing out.” said TrickorTreatMe creator, Krista Davies. “As the parent of a child with food allergies, I am keenly aware of how much they miss out on, and so I’m very proud to support the Teal Pumpkin Project.”

Allergy-Friendly Alternatives

Non-food treats recommended by the Food Allergy Research and Education Organization include glow sticks, pencils, pens, crayons or markers, bubbles, erasers or pencil toppers, mini slinkies, whistles, kazoos, or noisemakers, bouncy balls, spider rings, vampire fangs, mini notepads, playing cards, bookmarks, stickers or fake tattoos. The project does not aim to replace lollies as the traditional Halloween treat, but homes wishing to offer both are encouraged to keep the two in separate bowls.

Households keen to participate should register on TrickorTreatMe.com as a Halloween-friendly household, and tick the Allergy Options box along with their visit times. Their homes will display as a teal pumpkin, and families with allergic children can choose safe trick-or-treating options.

Coffee & Play Date @ Funky Monkey Bars New Local Showroom

Funky Monkey Bars Showroom Play Date

Melville Mums has teamed up with a new local neighbour, Funky Monkey Bars to host a Coffee & Play Date at their funky new showroom in the popular Stack Street precinct in Fremantle.

Visit Funky Monkey Bars (with or without the kids) between 10am and 2pm from Tuesday 19th to Friday 22nd October and Funky Monkey Bars will shout you a great coffee from Stacked Café, just next door. You can RSVP and invite your friends to come along here.

Check out what’s on display from the new spring catalogue and get yourself ready to shop for the funkiest outdoor play equipment for the whole family this Christmas.

The kids get to try out all the Funky Monkey Bars in the 600sqm showroom that’s been recently converted from an old mechanics’ workshop.  It’s a fantastic, sprawling space with the old, corrugated iron shed providing a striking backdrop for the modern, colourful frames.

Funky Monkey Bars manufactures its frames in Perth so they have plenty of stock, in lots of different configurations that have been designed for all ages and different shaped backyards.

The frames are height-adjustable, designed to grow up with your kids, and are totally modular so you can continue to add to Funky Monkey Bars over the years to keep the fun and fitness age appropriate.

The vision of the local company is Getting Kids Outdoors and, if the number of Funky Monkey Bars seen in yards around Melville and surrounds is anything to go by, they’re certainly achieving that dream.

Funky Monkey Bars Showroom Bananas

The Funky Monkey Bars hangout at 8 Stack Street, Fremantle is perfect for families to visit and play with yummy coffee and lunch options and other home retail options in the neighbourhood, as well as the beautiful Booyeembara Park at the end of the street.

This semi-industrial corner of Fremantle reflects the strength and sustainability of Funky Monkey Bars’ Australian galvanised steel frames, built to last for generations of kids.

Funky Monkey Bars has been around for over a decade and started out in Fremantle when local Dad, Shane Roberts, built the very first frame for his monkey bar fanatic daughters.

The company continues to make its frames here in Perth because it means they can make the best quality playgrounds for kids.  They also truly value the quality and strength of Australian steel, the high standards for playgrounds here in Australia and great local workmanship.

The good news for local families who choose to shop local at Funky Monkey Bars this Christmas, is that they will get top quality and there will be stock available for direct delivery to their backyard.  That’s a great benefit with empty shelves dominating the retail landscape this Christmas.

Funky Monkey Bars Showroom is open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and by appointment on Saturdays, just flick them an email info@funkymonkeybars.com or call 1300 912 198.

The Coffee & Play Date for Melville Mums is Tuesday – Friday October 19-22nd from 10am to 2pm.

Baby Sensory Melville has a brand new venue + special offer!

Looking for an activity for you and your baby which is fun, social and educational? Well, Baby Sensory could be for you and we’re excited to announce that there’s a brand new sparkly venue that has recently opened up in Melville, plus they have a special offer for Melville Mums!

For those that haven’t yet experienced the wonders of Baby Sensory, it is the first (and original) baby programme to offer a holistic approach to learning and sensory development from birth to 13 months. Parents internationally are discovering the benefits to this multi-award-winning program, both for baby and carer. Backed by over 35 years of research, a leading parent expert founded Baby Sensory with the aim of providing the tools needed to help support and empower the parent.

The new centre in Melville has been strategically designed to provide the ultimate sensory experience. The owner, Natalie, is a paediatric physiotherapist and mum of two, and we spoke to her about what she hopes the new venue will bring to the world of Baby Sensory.

“We can’t wait for parents to see our new venue, it’s bright, colourful and beautiful!” said Nat. “Every aspect of Baby Sensory has strategic thinking and planning behind it, from the colours of the mats on the floor to the structure of each class (which we change weekly with a new theme) to enable the baby to gain the most from the experience.

We want the space to be highly engaging, yet relaxing, there’s a huge creative aspect involved in running the programmes, as well as designing the venue. I want it to be so compelling that everyone comes back. A huge focus of what we do is to help strengthen the attachment between baby and carer, every activity we run is about fostering that attachment. Parenting (particularly for first-time parents) is such an anxious time, we want to support them through education and entertainment”.

Nat and the team are not only knowledgeable in Baby Sensory, but they’re all parents to young children themselves. “I have a two and a five-year-old,” said Nat, “and all the other class leaders have two kids too. We have recent lived experience which is important to be able to empathise with other parents. Parenting is hard, we come up with our own set of rules and boundaries and we do the best we can every day, we all channel that same ethos. We understand it can be a huge effort to get out of the house in the morning, our ultimate goal is for each and every parent or carer to leave us feeling that the last hour spent with us was totally worth the effort”.

Baby Sensory in Melville is situated at the Hawaiian’s Shopping Centre, with the convenience of an underground car park, Coles, a coffee shop and small playground – what more do you need?! Nat has already seen amazing growth in numbers attending classes, but she’s keen to encourage more parents to get involved. “Parents sometimes worry that their baby won’t get much out of it in the early months,” explained Nat. “But research now shows that a newborn’s brain is developing over a million new connections every second, so even if baby hasn’t yet got the motor skills to actively participate, exposure to a range of rich sensory experiences from a young age really will have a profoundly positive effect on their development.”

Top tips for getting the best price for your home

0

So, you are about to sell your home. What is going to help you get the absolute best price?

I have said this before, but it’s important so here’s a quick reminder. If you want to nail that top price, you’ll need to put the effort in and make sure your home looks as best as it possibly can. The key to securing the absolute best price is in the preparation.

Key areas of preparation

  • Get those repairs done – Buyers notice everything.
  • Clean, clean and clean – Your house is akin to a showroom during home opens.
  • Get painting done – Fresh paint usually has the greatest impact. Don’t forget the skirtings, doors and frames.
  • De-clutter – Less is more when presenting your house for sale.
  • De-personalise – We want the house to appeal to the widest audience possible.
  • Utilise some staging – Staging paints the picture for buyers and can have a huge impact.
  • Ensure there’s enough lighting – We love light and bright homes so let’s light it up.
  • Get good photos – This is what buyers see first, and we all know the importance of first impressions.
  • Day of home opens – The stage must be set well for the big day.

If you can get these key areas taken care of properly in the lead up, then you are giving yourself the best chance in getting the absolute top price possible. Anticipating all the hard prep work will allow you to draw out an emotional purchase from one of your potential buyers. This is where you can achieve a really great price. Buyers might be inclined to think more objectively before coming to a home open but, by the time they have walked through, they often buy subjectively and with far more emotion after seeing and experiencing something they love.

Marketing

Now, it’s not all about the preparation. The marketing must be good, or preferably great, if we want a better price. Marketing your property strategically to attract the right buyers, and lots of them, is a must!

Driving more competition to the home by spreading a wider net means investing in a good marketing campaign. Not all marketing items are appropriate for every property so my advice here is understand who your buyers are and then formulate a marketing strategy that is targeted to your market.

Work with your agent here, but don’t be afraid to challenge them on certain areas if you are unsure a certain piece of marketing is right for your property. If it’s tried and tested, then they should be able to explain that to you, and hopefully give you some examples.

Pick the right market to sell in

Trust your agent to guide you with their knowledge of the local market. The best time to sell is not necessarily the same for every property either as the property market is dynamic and different segments of it can be rising or falling at different times.

Each individual seller’s personal and/or financial circumstances may also have an impact on the right time to sell, but the obvious sentiment here is, if the market is booming then that’s the best chance you have of getting a top price for your home. It also might be a good time to sell if you aren’t in a highly desired property, for example, something on a busy road. I find that selling property on a busy road is far easier in a hot market than in a cold market. Those types of property get exponentially harder to sell in cold markets.

Pricing

As I’ve said before, list low and sell high. We can’t dictate to the market what the price for our property should be no matter how much we love our home or how special we think it is. However, we can strategically price our property in the market which will let us generate the highest level of competition. In turn, this will give your agent a better chance of negotiating those offers to a higher price.

If we price too high, then we will narrow the potential buyer pool too low, and your agent will struggle to negotiate a higher price if there’s only a limited number of buyers around. You don’t want your house sitting on the market for months on end, you’re more likely to get a better price on your home if you set yourself up to sell fast. Show the buyers that you mean business.

Working with the offers

So, all of the above has gone to plan and your agent has brought you an offer, or maybe a few. Your agent should have strategies on how to deal with multiple offers but here are some general tips to make sure you don’t get stuck.

We have said this a few times, but here it is again…the first offer is the best offer. Well, assuming someone hasn’t come in with a quick low-ball offer, it’s often your best offer. It pays to be ready to act quickly when you do get that offer. Buyers won’t want to wait around, especially in hot markets, so try not to drag things out too far, or at least be aware if you do, you may lose that buyer. Frequent communication with the buyer can help buy a little extra time so make sure your agent keeps them well informed. You usually don’t want to lose that buyer though, and remember sometimes a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

So, to sum it all up, put in the effort and prepare your house well. Make sure it’s clean, bright, decluttered, depersonalised and presented in its best possible light for photos and home opens. Pay attention to the marketing strategy and make sure it speaks directly to your target market. Make sure the pricing is right, don’t overshoot it and finally, when that offer comes in, remember quite often there’s not a better one coming later.

Purple Bra Day: A local mum shares her breast cancer journey

After learning about local mum and business owner Kate Petersen’s experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 47 and her efforts to help raise awareness and funds for Breast Cancer Care WA, Melville Mums reached out to help share her story and raise much-needed funds.

Hi there, I’m Kate! I’m a 47-year-old, busy working Mum with two beautiful boys, Lachie (aged 12) and Oliver (nearly 10). I run my own home styling business (Kate Petersen Design) and I also work in the mining sector. I love giving back to our community and volunteer as often as I can at both of our boys’ schools and at various sporting clubs. My husband, Justin, and I love keeping active with our boys and as a family we spend as much time as we can in the great outdoors with our dog, Chilli, tagging along! 🌳 ❤️

In June this year I had a routine 2-yearly mammogram (which I have done since the age of 40) and after a series of tests and biopsies, I was shocked to receive a diagnosis of breast cancer. How can this be?! I’m too busy and fit for this to happen and I have no family history of breast cancer!

The months of June and July were a total blur and during this time I had a left breast mastectomy and full axillary clearance of my left arm lymph nodes (during COVID so no visitors except my husband).  Much to my astonishment, the pathology report of my left breast showed that it was in fact riddled with cancer and unfortunately it had spread to one of my lymph nodes. I then started chemotherapy on 13th August.

Normally a private person on such matters, I couldn’t help but share my journey as I could not believe that as a fit, healthy person I had no signs or symptoms of breast cancer. I had in fact run 30kms of the Margaret River Ultra Marathon a few weeks prior so to say I was completely gobsmacked with the diagnosis would be an understatement!

My chemotherapy journey has been a challenging one and that has been very hard on my body physically and mentally. As a result I am having to take a break from work and my usual routines. There have been many highs, lows, tears, meltdowns and laughter along the way! I have been so overwhelmed with all of the love and support of my family, friends (old and new) and the local community. Without this support my journey would be even tougher. All going to plan, my last round of chemotherapy will be in mid-October, a few weeks shy of my 48th birthday.

The support I have received from my incredible surgeon, oncologist, breast care nurses at Bethesda Hospital, SJOG Murdoch and Breast Cancer Care WA has been amazing.  They have, and continue to, support me at a physical and mental health level. For this, I am incredibly grateful as I am still coming to terms with my original diagnosis, let alone the rest of my journey so far.

As I love a good fundraiser, to help raise awareness for Breast Cancer Care WA and to remind women to check their breasts and have regular mammograms, I am participating in the IGA Purple Bra Day on 24th September 💜

I will in fact be having chemotherapy on this day but decided that I wanted to take back some control as my usually normal life has been completely turned upside down. In mid-August, after my first round of chemotherapy, I actually shaved off my long locks and donated them to the Pony Tail Project. I decided that I would not be dictated by cancer when I would lose my hair!!

Please help to support me and this amazing cause and raise awareness for this silent disease. Remember I had no lump, signs or symptoms and ended up having a breast full of cancer! If it weren’t for my routine check I would hate to think where I would be. Together we can do this and beat this disease 💜

Please share my story and remind all those that you love to have their health-related checks…and to wear their purple bra on 24th September. Thank you for supporting me 💜

To make a donation, head to Kate’s Purple Bra Day fundraising page. No matter how big or small, every donation ensures that vital funds are going towards providing personalised support and care to West Australians affected by breast cancer.

Len Packham Reserve (Coolbellup) – Playground Review

The playground at Len Packham Reserve, Coolbellup, is situated next to the skate park, behind the library, and is a fabulous nature play space, tucked away under the big trees so there’s lots of shade.

There is plenty of opportunity for children to create their own adventure here with a great range of play equipment suitable for all ages and abilities, this includes a stacked log climb, a spiral ladder climb, a net tunnel bridge, climbing ropes, tunnel slide and a dry creek bed with rocks, and much more.

They can explore at ground level amongst the natural materials used such as rocks and recycled timber, or they can climb up to the tree house and let their imaginations take them on a journey, with a great slide if they need to make a quick escape from any invaders!

It’s perfect for little ones and big ones, especially if your older child prefers to play on the skate park, but make sure you have hats and sunscreen as there’s no shade over the skate area. This is another great spot if you need to exercise your dog, with the off lead park next to it. There’s BBQ facilities with picnic tables if you want to cook up some sausages for the next birthday party and there’s additional shaded timber seating around the outside of the park.

There’s a smaller slide for those not keen on climbing to the top deck and there’s a small round about for those that enjoy getting dizzy!

You could spend all morning here, just be sure to BYO your coffee as the closest is the Coolbellup shopping centre. The playground was created in 2020 and is a wonderful addition to the local playgrounds. It is definitely worth a visit.
