A couple of months ago, with my eldest son’s 7th birthday coming up, I started looking for a local activity that 6 and 7 year olds would love. I also preferred to find a venue that was mainly outdoors (thanks Covid!)

When the team at Point Walter Golf told us they’d be keen to work with Melville Mums to host the party at their Goanna Mini Golf Course, we jumped at the chance, and Mr soon-to-be 7 was so excited! Here’s what we thought about the venue, the food and the fun factor…

When we arrived at the golf course, we were welcomed at reception by the friendly staff and taken through to the alfresco area where our tables were reserved. It was a great spot to look out onto the mini golf, plus the alfresco is right next to the kitchen so it’s perfect to store the cake for later, and parents can order their much-needed coffee!

As well as the alfresco area, there’s also an indoor function room and other private areas to choose from so you’re sure to find an option that suits your needs.

The mini golf course as an outdoor venue is fantastic, even on a hot summer’s day, as much of it benefits from the natural shade cover from the trees. The course is well laid out, and each hole has two options with a white flag (easy) and red flag (more challenging), plus there are waterfalls, rocks, “sand” bunkers and water traps along the way to make the game even more exciting.

We had quite a large group of 16 energetic partygoers plus parents but, with 18 holes to choose from, we grabbed our clubs and balls, divided everyone up into smaller groups, and off we went! For those who have a competitive streak, each group can keep track with their own scorecard.

For us, the golf section of the party went for about an hour but if you have super keen players – or your group is a bit slower to get around the course – you can play for up to 1.5 hours.

When your mini golfers are ready to re-fuel, each child gets the choice of a water or juice box plus platters of sausage rolls, party pies, chips, veggie sticks and dips are brought out to the table. There are also optional add-ons of lolly bags and a grazing platter for the adults.

Thanks to the fantastic staff, here’s what we didn’t have to worry about on the day:

  • setting up a table (plates and cutlery included)
  • providing entertainment
  • preparing and serving food
  • cleaning up and washing dishes

All we needed to do was bring a cake (courtesy of my husband who is freakishly good at making birthday cakes!) and hang some decorations. Everything else was organised for us, and it made it so much less stressful knowing that the key aspects were sorted.
