Today, we’re chatting with the lovely Michelle, a local mum and creator of YOGAZOO, the first kids yoga school in Perth. She tells us how she decided to focus on providing kids yoga classes and lists her top benefits of yoga for kids.
Hi, Michelle. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m a mother of three beautiful children Oliver, William and Lilianna and have been living in Booragoon for 15 years! I am a school teacher that completed a yoga teacher training course whilst living abroad, came home pregnant with my first child and decided that as I love children and love yoga I must teach children’s yoga!
What inspired you to start YOGAZOO? What’s it all about?
I started yoga in my late 20’s and absolutely loved it! I enjoyed both the physical benefits and mental benefits and thought this would be wonderful for children. I did some research and found no-one else in Perth was doing it at the time and thought, ‘Why not start my own kids yoga school!’ As kids yoga so heavily relies on animal poses and shapes I could not resist the name YOGAZOO!! I am so proud of what this little business has grown into and now have a gorgeous team of teachers! We now offer classes both SOR and NOR and travel to schools all around Perth.
What have you found to be the benefits of yoga for kids?
There are so many benefits however if I had to choose the main benefits they would include:
Helping kids relax, unwind, and calm themselves
Reducing stress in kids
Helping kids improve their concentration and balance
Promoting a healthy, active lifestyle in kids
Helping kids sleep better
Improving gross and fine motor skills
Improving digestion
Increasing a kid’s strength and flexibility
Developing a child’s self-expression and self-confidence
Helping increase a child’s body awareness
So, what’s next for YOGAZOO?
YOGAZOO works quite a lot with the City of Melville and Hawaiian shopping centres so we are often part of festivals. We also run regular toddler yoga sessions every Wednesday at Hawaiian’s Melville shopping centre which is free for parents and toddlers.
We always offer FUN and interactive school holidays workshops for kids of all ages – check out the Facebook page for information. We also love working with both primary schools and high schools bringing in our Yoga and Mindfulness in school programs. We offer a range of different programs to suit any schools budgets, timetables and requirements. I am very proud of our school program.
What are some of your favourite places or things to do in the local area?
Whenever I get the chance , I love walking the bridges and quite often take the kids to Deep Water point and Point Walter for family picnics. Favourite places to hang with the friends include Coco Belle and Cioccolato and of course Garden City! We are so lucky to live in this wonderful area of ours!
Do you have any advice for mums looking to start their own business?
Do what you love and be patient. If you are passionate about what you do it will be successful. I work from home and love the flexibility it gives me to be able to still pick up my kids from school and go to all their school events.
To learn more about the various classes available, head to the YOGAZOO website or keep an eye on the Facebook page for updates on upcoming holiday and term-based sessions.
In the first of our Getting to Know… series, we chat with Sue Ross, a local mum and business owner. We learn more about how Choirs4kids got started, the benefits of singing for kids and what’s coming up in 2020.
Hi, Sue. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what life was like before Choirs4kids?
I am a happily married local mum of one girl plus two fur baby dogs! My career in music spans 30+ years with full training on piano, voice, flute and violin for over 20 years to a high level.
My teaching journey started 25 years ago when I became a primary school teacher. I taught general subjects and specialised in Music and Sport across many schools in the UK. After 10 years teaching there, my husband and I moved to Australia to live – better weather after the grey, grey and grey!! (you’ll understand if you are from there too!)
I taught in a number of schools here for another 10 years and then asked myself whether I was going to do it for another 20+. I couldn’t see it! I was also mum to a then 4 year old who loved music and singing, like many of them do. Anyway, for a number of reasons I gave up my teaching role in a school and started to replan my life.
What inspired you to start Choirs4kids? What’s it all about?
I was at a friend’s party when it dawned on me what I needed to do – I needed to create a safe space for my daughter to sing, to experiment with her voice, to make new friends outside of school, to be free to explore musically the things she did naturally. So Choirs4kids was born VERY quickly!
We started in Rockingham area back in 2016 with just one or two kids. Quickly our classes grew as more and more families realised that their children were not singing at school or couldn’t be part of the school choir for so many varied reasons. We now have 4 locations across Perth (locally Kadidjiny Park Hall in Melville) with three different age groups: Singing Joeys for ages 4-6, Singing Roos for ages 7-11, Vivid Stars for ages 10-16.
What do we do? We provide a space for the kids to learn how to use their voices without fear of ridicule or fear of having to have a ‘perfect’ voice. We develop their confidence through connection games, team games and other specialised Choirs4kids activities. We offer performances in the community when the children are ready and also add no pressure to perform. Performance when a child is NOT ready can affect them for life and continue their fear further. We work hard to include them in the performance and often have those more fearful ones helping with directing or standing with me in the ‘safe’ space.
What have you found to be the benefits of singing for kids?
The benefits are numerous and widely known of course but for me singing has helped so many of the children who have come through the Choirs4kids doors to become more confident in their daily and school life. Children can now stand up in the class for weekly news or presentations as we develop the skills not just for singing but ‘performing’ as a whole. We have had many parents say how singing has helped their child’s reading and readiness to read. Their maths also is improved as they learn to use counting for rests and missing words etc. They are generally more healthy as the studies show that singing boosts the immune system. They also make great new like-minded friends.
So, what’s next for Choirs4kids?
2020 for Choirs4kids is already being booked up! We have community events in February-March, and we also have our performance group starting mid-year ready to sing at the One Big Voice festival at the Perth Arena with other school kids across Perth.
We do pop up shopping centre singing and plan our family catch-ups once a term so that parents also get to connect with other families. Over the coming weeks in December we have the Rockingham Parade 7th Dec, Waikiki shopping centre 14th Dec, Joondalup Growers Market and Make Music Day event 21st Dec along with singing in Bull Creek Shopping Centre Thurs 12th Dec.
We do have a Choirs4kids summer Workshop planned for 15th January too. This is an all day workshop where you can drop your child with us for a full day of musical activities at Kadidjiny Park Hall.
As a local yourself, what are some of your favourite places or things to do in the area?
I love living here. It’s a great place to bring up a family and there are so many opportunities around for the kids. Sometimes there are too many opportunities of course too!
As a family we love Freo beaches!
Do you have any advice for mums looking to start their own business?
Have an idea to start your own business? My advice is probably less complicated than some – I had the idea, found the venue and booked in and then worked everything else out from there! Basically, what have you got to lose? Give it a go and, like us, you might just find it becomes your dream!
You can stay up-to-date with all things Choirs4kids via their website or Facebook page. Sue is offering trial classes so you and your child can see what Choirs4kids is all about.
As well as running Choirs4kids, Sue also directs her adult community choirs VividVoices so if you love to sing, head to the VividVoices website for all the details.

If you think art is just for fun, think again! Below are just some of the benefits of participating in art-based activities, and they don’t apply only to kids! It might be time for us all to pick up that paintbrush and tap into our creativity.
1. Encourages creative thinking
Creative thinking uses a part of the brain that affects emotional perception and visual imagery. Decision making and problem solving skills are continually called upon in art as there are many decisions to be made about colour, design and materials.
2. Builds confidence & self-esteem
Art develops a child’s perceptual abilities, extending their vision to see elements such as line, shape, colour and composition. But most important is the feeling of success a child gets from completing their artwork. Not only does it build confidence and self-esteem but it gives them a sense of accomplishment that can have ongoing affects in other areas of their life.
3. Sparks innovation
Art teaching in school is sometimes viewed as an optional extra but is essential for successful societies of the future. Research acknowledges creativity as crucial for innovation and, through curiosity and imaginative play, children can build on their creative and critical thinking processes, paving the way for future innovation.
Creativity, problem solving and developing our imaginations are as essential as math and reading if we expect kids to solve the problems of the 21st century.
– Professor Ewing, University of Sydney
4. Improves literacy, numeracy & social skills
There are growing concerns in the educational community that the increased focus on literacy and numeracy, that nationalised testing has brought, has resulted in funding cuts to education in the arts due to limited resources. Research conducted in the United States showed that not only can arts education improve skills in numeracy and literacy, but also show improvements in social development through teamwork, confidence and self-worth. Research also showed that students who study art are 3 to 4 times more likely to be recognised for academic achievement.
Well-known Perth artist and educator, Jane McKay, began the Creative Kids Art Club in 2011 to meet the demands of parents and to provide access to specialised art education for children aged 5 to 14 through after school and holiday classes.
The classes aim to fill that gap in creative education by providing quality art projects that give children the opportunity to unleash their creativity. The projects span a wide range of media from painting on canvas, clay work, 3D sculpture, printmaking and craft to weaving and sewing. Each term has a range of exciting new projects, so the children develop skills and techniques through new creative experiences.

Here at Melville Mums, we’re always on the look out for new places to go and things to do with the kids. Here’s all the details on a playground in Leeming that’s a welcome addition for local families.
Located at Peter Ellis Park in Leeming, this new playground has something for children of all ages. It may seem small but, with lots of different play equipment, it’s enough to keep even the most energetic kids entertained.
The play equipment includes a slide, climbing wall, nature play-inspired swinging bridge, monkey bars, fireman’s pole, climbing net and nest swing. And there is, of course, lots of sand to dig and play in!
The playground is situated at one end of a massive reserve with ample open space to kick a ball around, and there are even basketball courts a short distance away.
There are no toilets at the park itself, but the playground directly backs onto Leeming Forum where there are public amenities, cafes and shops.
As with many Perth playgrounds, the main disappointment is the lack of shade sails, meaning the sand and equipment is likely to get very hot during the summer. That aside, it’s a great little play space for families in Leeming and surrounding suburbs.
