Getting to Know Alethea Dreyer – IntotheMask

Today, we’re getting to know Alethea (Alee) Dreyer, owner of IntotheMask Theatre and local mum of three. We talk about connection, community and supporting others in having courage and expressing their creativity.

Hi, Alee. Please tell us a bit about yourself

I have always lived ‘south of the river’, mainly in the Fremantle area. But, I always knew that I wanted to live in Palmyra. A close friend of mine grew up in Pally and, a spooky coincidence, my hubby and I bought the house next door to her parents!

There is certainly something about the surrounding community that I absolutely love, and I guess you can say that I spent my youth connecting with people all the time. My parents owned a shop and I have been in the service industry since I was 14, so I have always had a passion for communicating and connecting with people.

Before I started my business 7 years ago, I completed a BA in Performing Arts and a Diploma of Education, spending most of my time teaching Drama in high schools. I have had a passion for theatre and performing since I was 4 (and if you want to know how I remember this, I can tell you the exact moment over a coffee 😛 )

What inspired you to start IntotheMask?

It wasn’t until I had the itch for travel that I delved into my craft further in my early twenties. My passion for theatre and connecting with my heritage took me to Italy to attend a 4 week course that would see me specialise in the “commedia dell’arte”. These new skills that I had learnt there enabled me to return to Perth to provide other teachers and the students with workshops, helping them master this very specific 16th Century Italian style of theatre. The commedia is renowned for characters wearing masks, hence, ‘IntotheMask’ was born.

Once I established myself as a business, and working part time in a high school teaching Drama, I connected with a community group in Hamilton Hill. From there, I volunteered my time to help out with supporting them with drawing audiences into their shows. I considered using my skillset and, if children were drawn to the theatre, so were their parents and grandparents. Holding a free event at the theatre drew in hundreds of children, and thus began my journey with The Drama Club.

What do you love most about what you do?

The thing I love most about what I do is that it is super rewarding. Over the 7 years, I have seen so many children benefit greatly by having the chance to express themselves creatively, show courage and most of all connect with the fundamental human communication skills.

In the past 4 years, I have seen a huge shift in the mental health of children when we saw a huge rise in social and digital media influence. It was overwhelming to read notes from parents who had children with anxiety, and a disconnection to others. I see my job is my duty of care to these children to support them and provide an opportunity to connect deeply with play,  to human emotion, to speaking and socialising face to face, and for a short while forget that TV and phones exist. There is such a power here in our classes that utilises all the skills of observing, listening, speaking, communicating through body language, learning to empathise and share ideas in a safe space, all which help reach their true potential.

Has the COVID-19 situation affected business, and have you had to do things differently over the past few months?

When Covid hit, I was so worried about our kids in our Drama Club. For some of them, the weekly classes are the only thing they look forward to, and the friendships and connections were incredibly important in their routine. Instead of cancelling altogether, my team of teachers and I worked around the clock to make sure that we developed online classes. It was hugely different and more planning involved – not to mention massive internet malfunctions – but if it meant that the kids saw one another, it was going to be ok.

We had 88 kids sign up over Covid, better than we expected and was truly received so openly by parents too. Since then, we have gone from strength to strength, working tirelessly to provide the best experience for these families during this tough time. I feel very grateful that, being in Perth, we are able to connect in a physical space again. It means the world to us to feel the energy in a room, and the kids beaming with joy and imagination.

What’s next for IntotheMask?

The next step for us is to continue to use drama processes and play as a way to help schools, teachers and students find their voice, spark imaginations and find the confidence to include play in their daily and weekly programs. We are on the journey now to improve literacy, personal and interpersonal skills in all children across WA.

The power of play through daily imaginative practices and processes will indeed bring about a much needed balance in children’s lives as they learn to navigate this ever changing world. Learning and development through meaningful play is our agenda, and if it starts with supporting our teachers, then that’s where you’ll find us next!

What are some of your favourite places or things to do in the local area?

The City of Melville has so much to offer. Kadidjiny Park is one of my favourites, as well as the beautiful river and playground down at Zephyr’s cafe. You’ll see my three kids and I venturing down there when the weather is warm. The BBQ area and playground at the very top of Point Walter is also a fun time, as well as taking our dog and scooters down to Burke Drive Oval.

Do you have any advice for mums looking to start their own business?

I would say go for it! Reflect on your values and beliefs and find out what legacy you want to leave behind for your children. It’s great that my children know that working is part of our culture and having a good work ethic is important to me as well as doing something that mummy absolutely makes her heart sing. I have recently started classes for my 4 year old so he can express creatively with other kids his age too. He loves it when mummy is the teacher – involving him makes his eyes light up. It’s an inspiring thing for me too! Be passionate and show courage!

If you would like to discuss how classes could benefit your child and any specific needs, we absolutely would love to help, so please give me a call and let’s talk about how we can support you and your family! Call me, Alee on 0416166013 or contact us for more information by email to dramaclub@intothemask.com

Getting to Know Claire Gasper – Diet-Free Me

In the latest Getting to Know blog post, we chat with Claire Gasper, non-diet dietician, founder of Diet-Free Me and local mum of 2. We talk about wellness, alternatives to traditional nutrition advice, and how adopting a non-diet approach can help promote a positive shift in your health focus.

Hi, Claire. Please tell us a bit about yourself

My husband and I moved to Willagee at the end of 2016 and we now have two kids. Our daughter turns 3 in December and our son turns 1 at the end of September. Prior to starting Diet-Free Me, I was a fulltime stay-at-home parent looking after our two little ones. I didn’t return to work after having my daughter, but I completed a Certificate IV in Breastfeeding Education with the Australian Breastfeeding Association. I love my volunteering work, and I find to so rewarding to be able to help families with breastfeeding.

What inspired you to start Diet-Free Me?

I was inspired to start Diet-Free Me because I’m fed up with people getting the same old advice about nutrition and healthy eating that just doesn’t work in the long run. I want to empower women to feel confident about their eating and connect with their body to eat intuitively. My mission is to get the message out there that there is an alternative to just going on another diet!

Some advice I’d like to share with Melville Mums is about shifting your health focus from weight loss to wellness. Everyone has a deeper reason for wanting to lose weight, such as wanting to feel fitter or to have more energy or to feel more attractive. Instead of waiting to lose weight to achieve those intentions, think about what you can do today to action them directly. By focusing on physically and mentally healthy behaviours, you can feel well regardless of what the number on the scales says.

What do you love most about what you do?

What I love most about what I do is supporting my clients to develop a healthier relationship with food that allows them to eat things they enjoy without feeling guilty. I love food and it makes me so sad to hear people say that they love certain foods but don’t allow themselves to eat them.

Has the COVID-19 situation affected business, and have you had to do things differently over the past few months?

My business is very new, so it hasn’t been greatly influenced by COVID-19, but I am offering telehealth sessions as an option for people who want to reduce their contact with others. These online sessions are also great for mums with babies or kids. I know how hard it is to get to appointments when you’re a stay-at-home parent!

So, what’s next for Diet-Free Me?

I’ve just launched my DIY package, which includes my 40+ page Beginner’s guide and access to my members-only Facebook group. My next project is to look into hosting some local information sessions or workshops for people who want to learn how to ditch dieting and feel better about their body.

What are some of your favourite places or things to do in the local area?

One of my favourite things to do in the local area is go for coffee and a play with my daughter. When my son was born, I wasn’t able to spend as much one-on-one time with my daughter, but now that he’s older, we can go out by ourselves. She loves to have a babycino and we often share a piece of cake or something. Carawatha Park in Willagee is great, and so is Kadidjiny Park in Melville.

Do you have any advice for mums looking to start their own business?

My advice is to figure out what makes you special, and what sets you apart from others like you in your field, then use that to promote yourself. For me, my non-diet approach is totally different to what people expect from a dietitian, so I really highlight how my coaching sessions are not what they’ve experienced if they’ve seen a dietitian before.

5 Common Vision Problems for Children

0

Incredibly, one in five Australian children suffer from an undetected vision problem. However, it can be difficult for parents to tell if their child is having problems with their vision, especially if they are young. Making it even more challenging is that children who experience vision problems often assume that how they see is normal!

While school screenings can be helpful in picking up issues with distance eyesight, they often do not detect other vision problems that can affect your child’s ability to learn both in and out of the classroom.

Regular comprehensive eye examinations help ensure your child’s vision is developing as normal and any underlying vision or eye health conditions can be picked up early.

COMMON VISION PROBLEMS FOR CHILDREN

REFRACTIVE ERROR

Refractive errors are the result of the shape of the eye causing the light to inaccurately focus in the eye, causing blurred vision. The three most common causes of blurred vision for children are Myopia or short-sightedness (blurred distance vision), Hyperopia or long-sightedness (blurred near vision), and astigmatism (can cause blurred vision at distance and near). Myopia is the most common refractive error in children and is on the rise due to our changing lifestyle – less outside play and more time indoors on digital devices.

EYE MOVEMENT PROBLEMS

Eye movements help us keep place and scan effectively when reading. If eye movements are slow or clumsy, or the eyes jump or “stutter”, it can make it more difficult to accurately read and process visual information. Eye movements are also important for sport as they help us find objects in space and judge their position.

EYE TEAMING PROBLEMS

Our eyes should work as a team in order to perform as one, however, some children do not adequately develop this skill in their early years. Children with poor eye teaming skills are only able to aim their eyes together correctly for short periods of time. Over time, words may become blurred or there may be double vision.

FOCUSING PROBLEMS

Eye focusing (also known as accommodation) skills allows us to see clearly at different distances. It also gives us the ability to quickly shift focus when looking from near to far, for example, when a child is looking from their desk to the board at school. Our eyes should automatically focus and be able to maintain this focus while doing close vision tasks. When children have focusing issues, their eyes fatigue very quickly and they are unable to sustain the effort required to keep focus and control over their eyes. This usually results in blurred vision when doing prolonged close work, headaches, and eye strain.

VISUAL PERCEPTION PROBLEMS

Visual perception skills refer to the skills developed from experience – relating size, shape, texture, location and distances. Visual perception is the ability of the brain to interpret and understand what is being seen by the eyes. A child is likely to have visual perception problems if they reverse letters and numbers, have difficulty recognising familiar words, having problems recognising their own errors and have poor planning and spacing on paper.

KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR…

If your child routinely exhibits any of these signs, a comprehensive behavioural vision examination is recommended.

APPEARANCE OF EYES

  • One eye turns in or out
  • Red, burning, itchy or watery eyes
  • Frequent blinking or rubbing of the eyes
  • Squinting

WHEN WRITING

  • Writes uphill or downhill, poorly spaced writing, or unable to stay on ruled lines
  • Repeats letters within words, reverses letters or omits letters, numbers or phrases
  • Squints, closes, or covers one eye
  • Slow, untidy, or frequent mistakes when writing or copying

WHEN READING

  • Holds book very close when reading
  • Loses place often or uses a finger to keep place
  • Leaving out words frequently, confuses similar words or fails to recognise the same word in a text
  • Re-reads or skips lines
  • Complains of blurred vision or double vision
  • Complains words move or “swim” on the page
  • Whispers to self while reading
  • Short attention span or quickly loses interest while reading

OTHER PROBLEMS

  • Squinting or sitting very close when watching television
  • Tilting head to one side
  • Must feel things to understand
  • Often confuses left and right
  • Avoids reading and other close work
  • Fatigues easily
  • Frequent headaches

WHAT HAPPENS IN AN EYE EXAMINATION?

During a behavioural vision examination, the optometrist will measure your child’s sharpness of sight and the prescription if required, to provide clear and comfortable vision (acuity and refraction).

They will also assess the ability of the eyes to work together as a team (eye teaming), the accuracy and ease of eye movements and the effort required to maintain focus and control over the eyes (eye movement and accommodation), and your child’s ability to distinguish between colours.

A full assessment of the health of their eyes will also be conducted, including checking for any abnormalities, signs of eye diseases and other health conditions.

WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD HAVE AN EYE EXAMINATION?

At age 3, an examination is recommended to ensure there are no signs of a lazy or turned eye or high degrees of long or shortsightedness. Before your child commences primary school, a comprehensive behavioural assessment is recommended to check for any vision problems that may interfere in learning.

Create Your Own Plate Artwork & Raise Funds for Kids Are Kids!

create your own plate artwork - Kids Are Kids!

Kids Are Kids! is running a Pictureproducts melamine plate fundraising activity and we’d love you to join in. Your child’s unique artwork is transformed into durable, high-quality melamine plate that will last a lifetime.

Children love eating off their individually designed plate, and as the years go by and they grow up and have their own families, their plate will bring back memories of those happy childhood years.

Your child can use photos, markers, paints and handprints to create their artworks and you can have as many copies made as you’d like, so it’s a fantastic gift idea for grandparents and other family members –and just in time for Christmas. What will your child draw?

How to get involved

  1. Collect your A3 template/s from the Kids Are Kids! office at 26 Parry Avenue, Bateman (unfortunately we cannot post as folding will affect the production).

  2. Your children can create their artwork at home in their own time with pens, paint, stickers, fingers, feet and photos—the brighter the better! Remember that up to 2cm will be trimmed from the inside of the drawing area at time of production.

  3. Pay for your order online at https://pay.pictureproducts.com.au/KIDBAD/83757/
Please note a $1 payment processing surcharge will be applied per transaction. You can purchase as many plates from the one drawing as you like. Please indicate this on the top right of the template.

  4. Please deliver your children’s drawings to the Centre when complete and ensure your order is paid for online prior to returning. Don’t forget to add your child’s name to the top right of the template.

** Drawings and payments are due by Monday 7 September 2020. Please deliver back to the Centre **

5. Once your order is completed at the Pictureproducts factory, it will be posted back to Kids Are Kids! We will let you know when your order is ready for collection. Please note that the estimated date of delivery is 14 December, 2020 (this is subject to change).

The plates are priced at $28 each and $6 of every plate ordered will go directly to helping the children of Kids Are Kids! As a not for profit organisation we rely heavily on the financial support of businesses and individuals to ensure our services are accessible to all children and their families.

If you have any questions please call Kids Are Kids! on 9313 6566.

Getting to Know Belle MacColl – Born to Sparkle

In the latest Getting to Know blog post, we chat with Belle MacColl aka Mrs Sparkles, founder of Born to Sparkle. We talk about all things glitter, parties and bringing joy to the local community, plus Belle’s got an amazing offer for Melville Mums!

Hi, Belle. Please tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Belle MacColl, but most people know me as Mrs Sparkles. I am the founder/co-director/boss lady at Born to Sparkle!

We firmly believe that no matter your age, everyone deserves a little sparkle in their lives.

Mr Sparkles & Glitter Glam are my immediate family and inspire me daily! Mr Sparkles is an engineer by day and glitter guy by night. He’s my right-hand man and the designer/manufacturer of all our bespoke glitter tattoos.

Glitter Glam is my amazing little girl who loves helping us sparkle at events sometimes – she’s a talented sparkler!

My staff, which we like to call our “sparklers”, are considered to be part of the sparkle family as well.

What inspired you to start Born to Sparkle?

I started Born to Sparkle in 2016 as a way to support myself and help people!

In 2015 I was a survivor of a serious motor vehicle accident which left me unable to return to my former job in the healthcare industry.

I was really struggling. Not being able to work made me realise how much I missed it!

My daughter knew that I could make people smile. She gave me the motivation to keep going! And with encouragement from Mr Sparkles, Born to Sparkle was born.

Mrs Sparkles with Mr Sparkles and Glitter Glam

What services do you and your “sparklers” offer?

There are just so many to choose from! You’ll have to keep an eye on our socials and our website!

Our glitter tattoos are extremely popular & we’ve had an amazing response from the community!

We have literally hundreds of designs to choose from and our catalogue is always growing based on what you love!

We are also known for our face sparkles and reusable gems. We love carting our sparkle bar around to all different kinds of celebrations, festivals and markets.

What you might not know about are our special add-ons! We have DJs, balloon twisters, face painters, hair braiders, and dancers in the Sparkle Crew. We can create custom glitter tattoo designs, bring disco party lights, play party games, and lots more…

We’ve actually got a discount code for you ladies – use MELVILLEMUMS to get 10% off when you book a sparkle party. We really appreciate your support!

What do you love most about what you do?

I love making people smile. Honestly, giving back to the community and lighting up someone’s life in a small but sparkly way really makes my day.

So, what’s next for Born to Sparkle?

We do have some exciting projects in the pipeline. For example, our DIY Sparkle Packs where we teach you how to sparkle at home.

We’ve also teamed up with another local, small business, Delish Ice, for a cool collaboration.

We’re working on a very exciting, shimmery new range of glitter-free tattoos. This is top secret! Keep your eyes peeled…

We are also wanting to expand our NAIDOC pack if any ATSI community members are interested in consulting with us.

Any exciting community events coming up?

Since the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, we’ve been able to do sparkle parties for people again! Look out for us in the community as the restrictions continue to ease up. We’d love to see you and get you glittery! We actually are giving out FREE Sparkles at the City of Melville Kidchella so come and say “Hi!”

What are some of your favourite local places/things to do?

My favourite place is Fremantle of course! But I do like going on adventures, discovering new places, food, coffee and just meeting people.

I love partying with all my sparklers.

But I also like to relax, put my feet up and have a glass of wine during my down-time.

I love my bed! There is nothing like it after all the business and Mum duties are done and, if I ever get the chance, I love a good sleep in!

To stay up-to-date with all things Born to Sparkle, head to their website, Facebook page or Instagram feed.
